Why use Goodnotes? 6 Useful Features

Taking handwritten notes has never been easier, thanks to the many digital note-taking apps available today. With digital note-taking, you can keep all your notebooks organized and accessible on your tablet or device. One of the most popular apps you may have heard of on the App Store is GoodNotes. It's packed with useful features that make it a great choice for students, professionals, and anyone who wants to make their note-taking process more enjoyable. In this post, I'll share some of the features I love on GoodNotes and explain why it's worth considering for your note-taking needs. Whether you're a seasoned note-taker or just starting out, you're sure to find plenty of reasons to love GoodNotes. Do note though that it can only be used on Apple operating systems: iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Let's jump in and explore six useful features!

1. Digital Organization

Digital organization is a key benefit of using GoodNotes for note-taking. With GoodNotes, you can keep all your notes in one place, which eliminates the need for multiple physical notebooks or paper clutter. This is particularly helpful for those who take notes frequently or have multiple classes or projects to keep track of.

You can create as many different notebooks as you need for each subject or your different projects, and carry it all in one device. You can also organize your notebooks into folders, making things easily found.

Additionally, GoodNotes has a strong search capability, so you can quickly find any note or information you need. It can recognize handwritten text, which makes searching easy whether you prefer to type out your notes or go the handwritten route.

Another benefit of digital organization in GoodNotes is that you can easily move or copy notes between notebooks. This is particularly useful for those who have notes that are related to multiple subjects or projects. With just a few clicks, you can move or copy your notes to the appropriate notebook, keeping everything organized and easily accessible.

2. Versatile Note-taking

GoodNotes offers a variety of ways to take notes, including handwriting, typing, drawing, and highlighting. You can also add images to your notes; for avid stationery lovers, this is a great way to add ‘digital stickers’ to really customize your digital notebooks and pages exactly how you want them.

The app offers a wide range of built in template papers, including graph paper, lined paper, and more. You can even design your own templates and load them into the app, easily allowing you to create a new notebook using those new template pages.

Or if you want to start really exploring the world of digital stationery, have a look at Etsy for stationery you can add to your collection! Digital notebooks and journals come in PDF format which you can import into the GoodNotes app, and digital stickers come in image format, usually PNGs which you can add to your collection to easily access. Read on to find out about that handy function!

3. Easy way to organize your digital stickers and other frequently used elements

Digital stickers are a fun and creative way to add some personality to your digital notes, but they can quickly clutter your digital space if they're not organized properly.

Thankfully, GoodNotes makes it easy to organize your digital stickers with the Elements feature. You can create collections to organize things into different categories, then easily import images from your gallery or iCloud drive.

In addition to stickers, the Elements feature allows you to ‘collect’ handwriting, highlights, shapes, images, text boxes or a combination of them as well. This is great if you things you use often across your notes such as charts or headings.

4. Keep your highlighter and pen colour palettes saved, easily change colours

A great feature is the ability to save and easily change highlighter and pen colors. This can be helpful for a variety of tasks, such as highlighting important information in a document, creating color-coded notes, or simply personalizing your notes. Both pen and highlighter functions have their own color palettes, allowing you to choose your favourite colors for both of these.

Being able to save your color palettes is a great way of ensuring your note-taking theme stays consistent and you don't have to worry about constantly finding the right colors to use every time you change colors.

Once you’ve written something with the pen tool or used the highlighter, you can still easily change the color by using the lasso tool to select whatever you’ve drawn / written. Your color palette will pop up and you can select a new colour to use.

5. GoodNotes Interface is Intuitive and Straightforward to Use

GoodNotes' user interface is simple, straightforward, and intuitive, making it easy for users to quickly pick it up and start using the app.

The app's toolbar is located at the top, providing easy access to all the necessary tools. Each tool has some handy options but they’re not complicated, which makes things straightforward. Here is a quick breakdown of some of the different tools and the options it allows you toggle / customize:

  • Pen Tool: Fountain Pen, Ball Pen, Brush Pen

  • Eraser: Precision Eraser, Standard Eraser, Stroke Eraser

  • Highlighter: Automatically straighten

  • Shape Tool: Snap, Fill Color

6. Audio recording

Previously, Notability (another popular note taking app) was a top choice if you wanted audio recording included in your note taking app, however recently GoodNotes has also introduced this feature!

This is a fantastic tool for anyone who wants to take comprehensive notes during lectures or meetings. With this feature, you can record audio while taking notes simultaneously. This ensures that you never miss a single detail or important point during the lecture or meeting.

The audio recording feature is easy to use. Simply open a new note in GoodNotes and tap on the microphone icon. The app will start recording audio, and you can begin taking your notes at the same time.

In conclusion, GoodNotes is a powerful and versatile note-taking app that offers a great amount of features that are easy and straightforward to use; helping you stay organized and productive. GoodNotes is now available on the AppStore, you can try it out for free where you get 3 notebooks. If you decide that it's for you, you can purchase it for $8.99 USD.
